There are few things better when you get to work in the morning than a fresh cup of coffee. However, taking a sip of coffee and having it taste awful can set the mood for the day.

There are two main reasons that your coffee can taste bad. The water you are using may have a high content of impurities and minerals, and the coffee maker may not be properly cleaned. Over time, especially if you have hard water, a scale can build up on the inside of the coffee maker and cause the coffee to turn bitter when brewed.

Cleaning your coffee maker is actually quite easy. Using the pot that holds the coffee, you will want to mix water with 3 cups of white vinegar. Run this mixture through your coffee maker for a complete brew cycle. If the maker has not been cleaned for a while or the water that enters into the pot is very dirty, you may want to run a second fresh pot of vinegar and water through your maker.

Once you have cleaned the maker, let the machine sit for at least 1/2 hour and then run a full pot of plain water through the machine. Let is set again for a 1/2 hour and rinse the machine again. This will make sure the machine has been completely cleaned, and there is no residual vinegar taste.
